HOMESTORY – Visit with drag queen Tamara Mascara

9. January 2020

As a drag queen and artist, it is always a concern for her to surround herself with beautiful things that reflect her inner self. That’s why Tamara Mascara, together with our interior professionals from KARE Vienna, has given her dressing room in her Viennese home a new shine – a visit to Drag Queen Tamara Mascara.

Tamara Mascara is one of the best-known faces of the Austrian LGBT scene and has been campaigning for the rights and equality of the LGBT community for many years. Her spectacular appearances as a drag queen, such as on the TV show “Dancing Stars”, are always characterized by a strong message of equality in addition to lots of glamor and glitter.

“I would describe it as a mix of classic elements, kitsch and glamour,” says Tamara Mascara about her interior design style. That’s why classic elements meet modern, glamorous accents in her home: “I had the old wooden floor and the tiled stove renovated, these elements represent the Viennese Altbau style in its purest form.” As a modern contrast to the romantic Altbau chique, our interior design professionals use straightforward, mirrored elements: series LUXURY, which offers a diverse range of uses from chests of drawers to desks to side tables and is easy to combine with any style. In addition, mirrored surfaces reflect light and thus provide more depth, brightness and of course a lot of GLAM.

Speaking of glam: as befits a drag queen, in addition to her spectacular makeup and styling, mirror LUXURY FRAME TRE and illuminated stand mirror MAKE UP provide a good dose of elegance and bring the glamorous Hollywood of the golden era in her dressing room. Floor lamp SCALA BALLS CHROME not only conjures up light in the dark, but once again emphasizes the contrast between classic and modern elements.

Her many talents include her activities as a DJane, fashion designer and organizer of various nightlife events and shows, for which she designs and sews a large part of the costumes herself. By the way, Tamara Mascara has an important tip for those who like to present their styling fundus openly: “In my closet space, I chose white as the basic color because I left my closets open to present the beautiful dresses and costumes like in a store. If the room were colored, the different colors of the dresses could make everything look unruly.”

Of course, drag queen Tamara Mascara can’t be without a touch of kitsch. “I like to place details everywhere that catch the eye. It can be antique porcelain figurines from the flea market, a mirror casket with a skull clasp or a chandelier in rainbow colors.”

As the face of an Austria-wide anti-hate campaign or internationally as a representative of a cosmopolitan and LGBT-friendly Vienna, Tamara Mascara has long been established as Austria’s best-known drag queen. However, this does not stop her from continuing to work for charitable causes.

“It’s important to me to teach people that you can do anything if you believe in yourself and work hard for it.”
